The Old Motorcar Showroom

Planning has been approved for the redevelopment of the former 1935 Art Deco-style motorcar showroom into a 5,500 sq. m residential-led mixed-use scheme in West Wickham, Kent.

The locally listed landmark has more recently undergone conversion to a DIY store and lost most of the building’s former glamour, which included a roof garden and restaurant with its own orchestra stage.

The sympathetic new design will create 61 apartments across four-storeys over basement car park, restoring the best features of the original showroom by mirroring its ‘streamlined’ 1930s elevation around an existing central brick drum – creating a symmetrical facade that greatly enhances the civic presence of the site. The scheme will sweep away years of unsympathetic extensions, alterations and mobile telecoms infrastructure to provide a forward-looking building of which the local community can take pride in.
